    Property description

    The cottage is in a farm location on the side of the Taw Valley with magnificent views of the valley and Exmoor. The coast and beaches are just 25 minutes drive away. The warm indoor pool is fed from spring water. There is only one holiday cottage on the farm. You can pay by credit/debit card with live availability on our own website.

    Accommodation description

    Bedroom 1 - King size bed and single bed, built in wardrobe, drawers etc. The cot is a full size wooden one with mattress. It fits in either bedroom. Bedroom 2 full size bunk beds with built in wardrobe, drawers etc. This is a smaller room ideal for kids.

    Bath, electric shower, sink and toilet.

    Dish Washer, Fridge with large freezer compartment, microwave, fitted oak units. Hob, double oven and all the utensils you could ever need to provide even a gourmet meal! Pine table seats 5. High Chair provided.

    Utility Room:
    Washing machine, tumble drier, freezer, ironing board.

    Living Rooms:
    Fireplace, leather sofa and armchair, rocking chair, free wifi (up to 6 meg). Flat screen Digital freeview TV, DVD, Video, Freesat with Humax pause, play,rewind and record. Fully Carpeted. Fantastic views down the valley.

    The 30' x 12' swimming pool is kept between 31c and 32c ensuring enjoyment for even the youngest, in crystal clear water, whatever the weather. The pool is enhanced by underwater lights, sound system and poolside shower room.

    Cleaning/Towels/Linen/Maid service:
    Linen and tea towels are included as are toilet rolls, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid and washing powder. A cleaner carries out a comprehensive clean before guests arrive. On holidays of more than 7 days a change of linen is offered.

    Disabled access is poor due to the steepness of the surrounding land and two narrow steps up to the front door and two into the Pool. However we more than welcome those with mobility problems and will do everything we can to accommodate them.

    To the front there is a raised decking sunbathing area with access to the indoor pool. In front of this is a gas barbecue. A small stone barn close by can store bicycles if you bring them, more outdoor chairs and is home to several swallows nests in the Summer and hibernating hedgehogs in the winter! The hot tub is outside in the raised decking area. The play area to the rear of the cottage has wonderful views and has swings, bench and fixed whirly clothes dryer. Through the gate there is a two acre paddock with a tree house. The fields around have cattle and sheep in them. Free range chickens provide eggs most of the year. In 2014 extensive works taking 6 months were undertaken renovating and upgrading the outside area to the cottage.

    Important notes on accommodation

    The pool is accessed through a locked door so is secure. It is only available to the guests in the one cottage so you have exclusive use. It is available from 8.30am to 11pm daily and until 9.15 am on the day of departure. The hot tub is available for the same times but may not be available for one day due to emptying and cleaning. We usually require a few minutes access to the pool and tub for cleaning and chemical checking purposes but this is done in consultation with guests.

    Notes on prices
    10% discounts are given for couples, two week holidays and previous guests. A deposit of one third is required to secure the booking and the balance is due six weeks before the holiday. There are no extras for heating, compulsory insurance, pool, washing machine or any of that nonsense! Payment can be by credit/debit card or direct bank transfer via our secure website or over the phone.

    Changeover day
    Arrival after 2pm and departure before 10am. We try to offer 7 or 14 day commencing on fridays but offer weekend breaks commencing on a fri or midweek breaks commencing on mon. School holidays we offer min 7 days and at other times a min of 3 nights.

    Fill in a booking form via our own website. One third deposit is required with the balance due 6 weeks before the holiday. We currently give 5% discount for holidays longer than 7 days and 10% discount for couples who only use one bedroom.

    About the area

    Because of the central location of the cottage a very wide variety of beaches and coastline can all be reached in under thirty minutes drive. Insow - 20 minutes, Woolacombe, Croyde, Saunton - 30 minutes. You can chose between rocky, sandy, surfing, rock pooly, secluded, commercial beaches to suit your need.

    There are six 18 hole golf courses within 30 minute drive! Including saunton and royal north devon. The owner is a keen golfer and can show you the courses or offer to play with you. We even have spare golf clubs for both women and men and spare tolleys to borrow at no cost!

    Special Interest Holidays
    Our friend & neighbour is the artist Colin Allbrook. He undertakes private courses in his studio or at the cottage. One of the most respected and renowned painters in the South-West of England he works in both oils and watercolours and through the use of light and colour, Colin depicts the life & activity of the area. He is is regularly selected for prestigious exhibitions such as the Sunday Times Watercolour competition and the Royal Institute of Painters in Oils. He is an elected member of the Royal institute of Painters in Watercolour (RI), the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) and the Society of Equestrian Artists (SEA).
    He has received many awards for his work, including, in 2009, both the Turner Watercolour Award and the Rowland Hilder Award for landscape painting at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour exhibition. He has also twice won the 'Terence Cuneo' medal at the SEA and the 'Excellence in Watercolour' prize at the Royal West of England Academy four times.

    How to get there
    Approx 40 mins drive from junction 27 on M5. 12 mins drive from Barnstaple, South Molton and Torrington. Car is really important here and although the Tarka Cycle Track is not far away it is not ideal cycling very close to the farm due to the steepness of the roads and winding main road.

    15 mins to RHS Rosemoor. 35 mins to Exmoor or Dartmoor.
    Eden Project can be visited in a day or why not take the train from the local station (1 mile away) into Exeter (1 hour) or Barnstaple (8 mins).

In the heart of unspoilt Tarka country, (from Henry Williamson's 'Tarka the Otter') Bartridge Cottage is ideally situated to explore the rolling landscape of Exmoor, the deep wooded valleys, rugged coastline, sandy beaches, pretty villages or bustling seaside towns. The cottage is set in its own tranquil location next to the farmhouse amongst farmland on the side of the Taw Valley. Approached along a private lane that winds its way up from the River Taw below to its commanding viewpoint on the side of the valley, it provides spectacular views for many miles around. Buzzards, deer, badgers, rabbits, foxes, owls, bats and kingfishers are amongst a number of animals that are local inhabitants.

    "A fantastic holiday!"

    Our second visit to the lovely Bartridge Cottage.The cottage is set on a hillside with breathtaking views over the Taw valley and hills beyond.Accomodation is very good with everthing you could need for a comfortable stay.The pool and outside Jacuzzi are a fantastic place to relax after a day out. Rob is the perfect host,happy to help and very keen for you to enjoy your stay. The cottage is well placed a few miles inland from Barnstaple,the coast,Exmoor etc being an easy drive away,to the south is a scenic drive down the Taw valley,Dartmoor isabout an hour away. The list of places to go and things to do is endless,our favourites were Lynton and Lynmouth,Porlock ,Clovelly,Appledore ,Becky Falls on Dartmoor were impressive and the landrover safari over Exmoor was an experience not to be missed. A perfect holiday for us not spoilt by the occasional shower,have already booked our next stay.

    This was our second stay and favourite cottage in north devon. The location is just right with good restaurants , beaches , attractions and shopping within a easy drive but still in a rural location . The cottage has everything you need for a relaxing holiday with the indoor pool and hot tub outside on the raised decking with stunning views of the devon countryside. The cottage is well equipped and is true home from home. The owners are a very nice couple and will give you sound advice on whatever you are after to make your stay a memorable one. All in all a perfect holiday for me and my family. Will be back soon

    About the Owner

    Veronica and Robert have lived in the Farmhouse for nearly 30 years and converted the 17th century barns into a cottage and indoor pool over 20 years ago. 'We enjoy travelling and visiting new places and have tried to have the cottage as we would like to find on our travels.' The photo is of our family at Robs recent 60th birthday party.

    Why this location?

    We have lived in our current house in Umberleigh for nearly 30 years. When we moved here we thought that we were on holiday all the time so we converted the holiday cottage and built an indoor pool so that others could enjoy the views and surroundings. It has been let out for over 20 years and every season it is full or nearly full, the majority with repeat bookings. Some regulars book up 2 years in advance! The house and cottage are set a third of a mile from the road so it is totally peaceful with spectacular views. However once on the nearby A road it is easy to reach many places quickly without encountering any traffic!

    What are the unique benefits of the property?

    We have people coming back to the cottage year after year because of the tranquility (except when the combine harvester is going or the cows mooing!) and spectacular views. Its an unspoilt area which is not affected by tourists, with the roads quiet even in the midst of summer.
