Gites in Blavet Valley, Quistinic, Near Baud, Brittany
About the area
The river beach at Minezan (3 km) is perfect for days when you want to combine a walk or bike ride along the towpath along the River Blavet with a visit to the "beach" and a drink or ice-cream from the nearby rustic bar.
Beaches are within a 35-40 min. (30km) drive away - 30 minutes to Port Louis at Lorient - and offer large beautiful white sandy beaches where swimming and water sports can be enjoyed. Wind surfing/kiting is particularly popular on the west coast of Quiberon and Larmor Plage.
For golfers the nearest course is at Rimaison www.rimaison.net (13km /8 miles) with others within a reasonable drive at Val Queven (35 km / 23 miles); St. Laurent (40 km 25 miles) Ploemeur-Ocean (43 km 27 miles) and Baden (44 km / 28 miles)
How to get there
Airport: Dinard/Nantes/Brest 2 hour drive. Renne 90 mins. Lorient (from Southampton) summer only, 40 mins. Port: St Malo/Roscoff 2 hour drive. Caen, Cherbourg 4 hour drive. Calais/Channel tunnel 6-7 hour drive with tolls. A car is necessary. Brittany Ferries: When booking with us and travelling via Brittany Ferries from the UK, we are able to offer a 10% discount from your fare.
The village centre with general shop, patisserie, crêperie, pharmacy, post office, bar-tabac is a 2 minute drive away. Visiting butchers, pizza and fish vans together with a bio-vegetable stall once a week, provide for a very local shopping experience. Supermarkets/petrol stations can be found at Bubry (6 km) and at Baud ( 12km) away.
Quistinic is situated in the heavily-wooded Blavet Valley yet only 35 minutes to the coast. Just along the valley the restored 16th century hamlet of Poul Fetan has been brought to life. Visitors may watch demonstrations of rural tasks of that period, take a drink and snack at the bar, and buy local crafts. During the summer months at nearby Pont Augan one can hire kayaks, relax over a restaurant meal, take a pleasure boat trip to see more of the countryside bordering the river, or enjoy a cycle ride along the towpath. Fishing is a popular local pastime and there is easy access along the banks to the water. For those who wish to relax, Quistinic is an ideal location, and days can be spent without travelling far afield. However, there is much to explore within the region in any direction. Seafood enthusiast can indulge their appetites at excellent quayside bar/restaurants in St Goustan, Auray, or taste freshly-baked pizzas and salads. The historic walled town of Vannes with its timber-framed buildings and cobbled streets offer a wide range of interesting shops to browse. Each major town holds its summer celebration: the ten-day Inter-Celtic Festival in August draws crowds from far and wide to Lorient. Most village/smaller shops close at mid-day until 2pm. Supermarkets likewise close between 12 noon and 2pm out of season, during the high/peak season many will stay open until 7pm.

We returned for a second time this summer as we fell in love with La Chouette when we first visited a couple of years ago. The delightful stone cottage is well maintained with everything you need. The family room is spacious with beautiful views from the window seat over the garden and surrounding countryside. The large and totally private garden is gorgeous; it gets sun all day but there are plenty of little shady areas to escape to read your books. We had many BBQs which we enjoyed eating under the walnut tree. The pool, after a hot day's exploring or just for lazy days at the cottage, was a godsend for our children who were in it every day! It was kept clean throughout our two week stay. The games room, which is shared with La Vigna, was a real hit with the children who made great new friends. Plenty to do in there on those few unlucky rainy days or on an evening. The village of Quistinic, just a 10 minute walk down the country lane, is lovely and the locals very friendly and helpful (especially the English speaking pharmacist!) There are so many beautiful places to visit in Morbihan that I couldn't list them all here but some of our favourites are Poul Fetan, Vannes and the ancient megaliths in and around Carnac. The owners, Chris and Richard, are very attentive to your needs but are not intrusive. They are a lovely couple who we really enjoy meeting and chatting with. I can not recommend La Chouette highly enough. You will not be disappointed with this delightful cottage and beautiful garden. The perfect little getaway!
Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children and romantic getaway
We spent 2 weeks in Brittany with La Chouette as our base and cann't recommend it enough. The cottage is beautiful and the setting idyllic but still has the mod. cons. The garden is perfect and private from La Vigne and we spent plenty of time lounging or barbecuing - plus collecting walnuts! Be sure to visit Poul Fetan which has a surprising amount to see and the towns of Josselin, Pontivy and Quimper are within driving distance and well worth a visit. Although the village of Quistinic is small the cottage is only a 5 minute drive from Bubry which has more shops and and Intermarche.
We had a very enjoyable stay at La Vigne. Chris and Richard have made the gite very comfortable and homely, the garden is great for kids, fully enclosed with lots of toys, slides, sandpit etc, also inside the gite more toys! The pool was also a big hit with the kids! Its very peaceful and rural, very pretty setting. I would definitely recommend! Thanks Chris and Richard
About the Owner
Having enjoyed living in rural Devon and Cornwall for many years, we became aware that the popularity of the area was increasingly attracting more and more "traffic", so we decided it was time to look for a new location, with a similar climate, and one that would enable us to continue with the lifestyle that we had come accustomed to.
Year property purchased: 2008
Why this location?
Fortunately, we were lucky enough to find this when we stumbled upon the small, beautiful, peaceful rural hamlet of Locunehen. Here we have been able to sample the laid back Breton way of life, watching the cows meandering along the lane as they come in for milking twice a day, and yet still being able to have easy access to the numerous large sandy beaches and historical towns of Southern Brittany.
What are the unique benefits of the property?
Our aim is to provide you and your family with “home from home” comforts and the best possible start to your holiday. Whether it be: having Wi-fi;your own heated pool; secure private garden; bicycles to cycle around the country lanes; a games/playroom for those too hot days (and occasional wet ones!), or having an evening meal and provisions awaiting your arrival, we are more than happy to oblige. For young families we are pleased to be able to provide an extensive array of equipment and prepare the property and gardens with the younger members' requirements uppermost in our minds. Guests without children are equally catered for with the excellent service and attention to detail that we provide.
