McManus Family: This was our first time in that part of Germany and we were completely captured by the breathtaking scenery. We had a magnificent view from the balcony and the apartment was very comfortable, well equipped and spotlessly clean. It was very relaxing to sit on the balcony and just listen to the contented sounds of the cows and goats next door, take in the pure clean air and look at the breathtaking scenery. We will definitely be booking again in the future."
Wall Family: 'The accommodation is delightful, balancing the modern and the traditional. It is a well equipped and comfortable apartment with fairytale views of a snow covered landscape. With roads snow ploughed and always open, skiing at Feldberg, reasonable prices and a warm welcome from everyone, we had a brilliant winter holiday. Highly recommended
Lindsey Davies:The apartment was very well presented, well stocked and very tidy. We had a very relaxing holiday and are already talking about a return visit

About the Owner

John and I are 52 and 47 respectively, but still have an adventurous spirit. We like nothing better than travelling and exploring new places. I first visited the Black Forest with my German pen pal when I was 15. It was so memorable that when my husband and I were looking for a holiday home, I was immediately drawn there, almost 30 years later. We tend not to go for package holidays and avoid typical sun sea and sand deals, so this area is perfect for us. We can be as active or as lazy as we want to be, and range of activities and the changing seasons mean we never get bored. We have brought both my parents and friends out to visit, and everyone, young or old, has loved the apartment and the surrounding area.

Year property purchased: 2006

Why this location?

We purchased the property in 2006 at the time that Germany so successfully hosted the World Cup. As soon as we went through the front door, we felt at home. It was fresh and clean and had everything we needed for a great holiday, but it was the view from the large balcony that sealed the deal. We've spent many happy times outside eating, drinking or just looking at the view. The area changes dramatically with the seasons, hot in summer, deep snow in winter and red and gold foliage in the autumn. Despite being situated in a rural idyll, it's also ideally placed for exploring the corner of Europe where Germany, Switzerland and France meet. Freiburg, Strasbourg, Stuttgart and beautiful Lake Constance are all in easy access.

What are the unique benefits of the property?

Menzenschwand is a rural village that caters well for tourists. There is a good range of restaurants, inns and hotels for eating out, a bakery, post office, ski shop, drink shop and bank. The nearest town, St Blasien, is dominated by a magnificent cathedral and has several large supermarkets. There are many seasonal events in the area including wonderful Christmas markets in Freiburg, Stuttgart and Strasbourg and the wood carving festival and classical concerts in St Blasien. Anyone who doesn't believe Germans can enjoy themselves needs to experience Fasching in the weeks leading up to Ash Wednesday when each village goes mad dressing up and playing music. The area is a nature reserve, renowned for its clean air and unspoilt landscapes. Menzenschwand's Radon spa is also a major attraction.
