Comments from Alastair Sawday Publishing 'Special places to stay. French holiday homes'
Behind the arched blue door lies a restored 15th-century silk mill, its vaulted cellar rooms intact. It is an Aladdin's cave, an intoxicating mix of French, English, Moroccan and Indian treasures. Escape the blistering heat into this cool, calm space; the village is cooly perched in the foothills of the Cévennes and you are in the middle of it. No garden, but a peaceful gravelled courtyard with chairs for dozing, a barbecue, a fountain and a summer shower. Inside, your gaze drifts to mellow yellow-washed walls, tiles - the best of old and new - and lofty ceilings. The sitting room is cavernous but is cosy in wintertime: a wood-burning stove, William Morris-covered armchairs, comfy sofas, books, an upright piano. Arched doors lead from the well-equipped kitchen into the courtyard where you may eat. Up a floor and those lofty old silk rooms have magically become bedrooms.
Owner profile
About the owner
My wife and I retired to this beautiful part of France in December 2006: Having worked as a lawyer and podiatrist respectively we decided we wanted a complete change in our lives and have never regretted moving here.
Year purchased: 2001
Why the owner chose a home in this location
We chose this beautiful hill village silk mill because we were completely charmed by the region and the panoramic views over the vineyards and the best restaurant in the area actually in the village! Its close proximity to both Nimes and Montpellier made it a must for us. We arrived down on a Thursday evening in March 2001, fell in love with the property which had not been lived in for 50 years, and spent the next two years renovating it! Please come and see us there one day!
